When you train your mind how to think, you inoculate yourself against those who desperately want to tell you what to think.

The Problem with the Claim: "I'm entitled to my opinion"

Every year Patrick Stokes, the senior lecturer in philosophy at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, addresses his students with something like this:

“I’m sure you’ve heard the expression 'everyone is entitled to their opinion.’ Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself, maybe to head off an argument or bring one to a close. Well, as soon as you walk into this room, it’s no longer true. You are not entitled to your opinion. You are only entitled to what you can argue for.”

"A bit harsh? Perhaps, but philosophy teachers owe it to our students to teach them how to construct and defend an argument – and to recognize when a belief has become indefensible."

"The problem with 'I’m entitled to my opinion' is that, all too often, it’s used to shelter beliefs that should have been abandoned. It becomes shorthand for 'I can say or think whatever I like' – and by extension, continuing to argue is somehow disrespectful. And this attitude feeds, I suggest, into the false equivalence between experts and non-experts that is an increasingly pernicious feature of our public discourse."

"If 'Everyone’s entitled to their opinion' just means no-one has the right to stop people thinking and saying whatever they want, then the statement is true, but fairly trivial."

"But if ‘entitled to an opinion’ means ‘entitled to have your views treated as serious candidates for the truth’ then it’s pretty clearly false. And this too is a distinction that tends to get blurred."

finding her freedom

The Guest

Mischief

My friend,His bride and An old man.

My good friend decided to take the relationship with his girlfriend of 3 years to the next level. Our first move was a visit to her family house. As we approached the House,we encountered a narrow path with an old man walking majestically. Respect for Elders prevented us from hooting the Horn to urge him to move fast.We eventually left the narrow path and my friend impulsively gave the man a Loaf of Bread. The appreciation was evident followed by pronouncement of blessings. The visit was fruitful.

He became a constant Visitor to her Family House. On one of such visitations,he encountered the Elderly man again and made effort to know his House.Subsequently,he made it a point of duty to stop over at the aged Man's place before reaching his girlfriend's house. He never disclosed this relationship to his girlfriend neither did he disclose the motive of his visits to the elderly man.
